New Android Malware App Turns Phone into Surveillance Device

In September, the US Naval Surface Warfare Center created an Android app that secretly records your environment and reconstructs it as a 3D virtual model for a malicious user to browse

The power of modern smartphones is one of the technological wonders of our age. These devices carry a suite of sensors capable of monitoring the environment in detail, powerful data processors and the ability to transmit and receive information at high rates.

So it’s no surprise that smartphones are increasingly targeted by malware designed to exploit this newfound power. Examples include software that listens for spoken credit card numbers or uses the on-board accelerometers to monitor credit card details entered as keystrokes.
Today Robert Templeman at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane, Indiana, and a few pals at Indiana University reveal an entirely new class of ‘visual malware’ capable of recording and reconstructing a user’s environment in 3D. This then allows the  theft of virtual objects such as financial information, data on computer screens and identity-related information.

Templeman and co call their visual malware PlaceRaider and have created it as an app capable of running in the background of any smartphone using the Android 2.3 operating system.
Their idea is that the malware would be embedded in a camera app that the user would download and run, a process that would give the malware the permissions it needs to take photos and send them.

PlaceRaider then runs in the background taking photos at random while recording the time, location and orientation of the phone. (The malware mutes the phone as the photos are taken to hide the shutter sound, which would otherwise alert the user.)
221192_Smartphone plans with unlimited music - from $55/monthThe malware then performs some simple image filtering to get rid of blurred or dark images taken inside a pocket for example, and sends the rest to a central server. Here they are reconstructed into a 3D model of the user’s space, using additional details such as the orientation and location of the camera.
596989_Precor- Home Sweet Health Club 160 x 600221192_Smartphone plans - $55/month   A malicious user can then browse this space looking for objects worth stealing and sensitive data such as credit card details, identity data or calender details that reveal when the user might  be away.
Templeman and co have carried out detailed tests of the app to see how well it works in realistic situations. They gave their infected phone to 20 individuals who were unaware of the malware and asked them to use it for various ordinary purposes in an office environment.
They then evaluated the resulting photos by asking a group of other users to see how much information they could glean from them. Some of these users studied the raw images while the others studied the 3D models, both groups looking for basic information such as the number of walls in the room as well as more detailed info such as QR codes and personal checks lying around.

237536_Cases 500x500Templeman and co say the tests went well. They were able to build detailed models of the room from all the data sets. What’s more, the 3D models made it vastly easier for malicious users to steal information from the personal office space than from the raw photos alone.

That’s an impressive piece of work that reveals some of the vulnerabilities of these powerful devices. And although the current version of the malware runs only on the Android platform, there is no reason why it couldn’t be adapted for other systems. “We implemented on Android for practical reasons, but we expect such malware to generalize to other platforms such as iOS and Windows Phone,” say Templeman and co.
They go on to point out various ways that the operating systems could be made more secure. Perhaps the simplest would be to ensure that the shutter sound cannot be muted, so that the user is always aware when the camera is taking a picture.

596989_Precor- Home Sweet Health Club 250 x 250However that wouldn’t prevent the use of video to record data in silence. Templeman and co avoid this because of the huge amount of data it would produce but it’s not hard to imagine that this would be less of a problem in the near future.
Another option would be a kind of antivirus app for smartphones which actively looks for potential malware and alerts the user.
The message is clear–this kind of malware is a clear and present danger. It’s only a matter of time before this game of cat and mouse becomes more serious.

Tizen-New OS soon for smartphone Users

The Indian market might see a new operating system for smartphones soon, as Japanese telecom major NTT DoCoMo and Samsung Electronics are jointly developing one that will likely be released in Japan and other Southeast Asian countries sometime this year.

According to Japanese daily The Yomiuri Shimbun, the operating system (OS) that DoCoMo, along with other partners such as Vodafone and France Telecom, is developing, is called the ‘Tizen’.DrJays Holiday Shipping Guide

The ‘Tizen’ operating system has been backed by Samsung since last year but has been invariably shelved for various reasons. The report further reveals that Samsung would probably begin selling ‘Tizen’-equipped smartphones sometime this year.106715_Shop for Fall at DrJays.com 468x60

The Tizen OS, like Android, is open-source for most part, and is being developed on the premise that cellular service firms will be able to offer their own services, taking a slice away from the value-added services pie dominated by Apple and Google.

5 TOTALLY CRAZY BUT TRUE FACTS ABOUT THE IPHONE

The most expensive piece in the iPhone 4 costs a whopping . . . $28.50. According to research firm iSuppli, the phone's Retina display screen is the priciest piece of the iPhone puzzle. Together, the parts total about $200, although that doesn't take assembly, design, or branding into account.

250 million units of iPhones have been sold to date. If all iPhone sales worldwide were concentrated in the US, it would be equal to nearly 80 percent of the entire US population.

Nine rare earth minerals are used to make the iPhone vibrate, play music, show color on its screen, and do all the cool things we love it for. Many of those minerals are concentrated in one place, and 90 percent of the elements are mined in China.170579_Save up to 50% Off Select Merchandise at bebe.com
The computer chip that powers the iPhone is manufactured by Apple's greatest rival, Samsung. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer — as close as inside of your bestselling product, we suppose. In case you missed it, Apple filed a huge lawsuitagainst Samsung in June, claiming that the company violated patent law by using aspects of Apple's most popular mobile devices in its smartphones. Apple won the case, which might make the collaboration between the two companies to design and manufacture the next mobile processor a little awkward.
237536_Chargers 300 x 250It took over 200 patents and 156 suppliers across three continents to make the iPhone. Everything from the look and feel of the phone to all of its individual parts to how precisely it's assembled was patented as intellectual property in early developments of the iPhone.
In 2012, Apple released a complete list of its iPhone, iPod, and iPad suppliers, revealing the intricacies of assembling the products.

5 Ugliest Smartphones Of 2012

596989_Precor- Home Sweet Health Club 728 x 90
Designing a smartphone shouldn't be too hard. There's only so much you can do with a rectangular block of plastic, glass, and assorted other materials. Even so, plenty of smartphones turn out to be grotesque pieces of hardware that are difficult to look at, let alone use day in and day out.

237536_Batteries 300x250After reviewing more than 60 devices this year, I've reached one conclusion with respect to design: the simpler, the better. The minute designers start to overthink what they're doing is when things go bad. Here are five of the worst from 2012.
1. HTC EVO 4G LTE. The EVO LTE is Sprint's variation of the One X from HTC. The One X is an attractive device made from a single piece of polycarbonate. It is simple, svelte and stylish. Sprint messed it all up. Sprint wanted its version to stand apart. It nixed the polycarbonate shell entirely and opted for a mish-mash of materials, textures and colors that end up looking more chaotic than cool. Worse, the metal band that encircles the display is painfully sharp against your skin. Some may like the black-on-red colors, but the EVO LTE was one of the devices I liked the least this year.
Huawei Ascend Q2. Huawei Ascend Q. This disaster of a device took a touch phone and stuck a QWERTY keyboard at the bottom. The result is an oblong smartphone of odd proportions. The lime green colors on the keyboard do nothing to help, and the materials were far from top-notch.

Huawei Ascend Q

3. LG Intuition. The Intuition, sold by Verizon Wireless, is LG's answer to the Samsung Galaxy Note "phablet." It has a huge screen and a stylus, just like Samsung's big phone. There's one problem: LG chose to use a 4:3 aspect ratio for the screen rather than 16:9. The result is an amazingly awkward phone that is incredibly wide and
596989_Precor- Home Sweet Health Club 728 x 90
nearly impossible to hold and use. It's also so large that sticking it in your pocket is pretty much impossible. It's no doubt one of the worst of the year.

LG IntuitionLG Intuition
4. Motorola Photon Q. This massive smartphone for Sprint has a big display, a big QWERTY keyboard and a huge footprint. There are a number of odd angles and other unfortunate design choices that give it a goofy look. The mixed blend of textures and materials go further to make the Photon Q look disjointed and poorly planned.
Nokia 808 PureView5. Nokia 808 PureView. The 808 may have had the world's first 41-megapixel camera, but it was a sin to behold. The massive camera components necessitated some ugly design choices. The 808 was thick and bulky, and the lump created by the camera module gave it an awkward appearance. Incredible as the camera was, the outdated Symbian platform made the 808 an easy smartphone to avoid.237536_Batteries 300x250
